How Mindfulness Meditation Changed My Life

For the past several months, I’ve been trying to establish a daily routine that will help me get more done, nurture my soul and maximize my time.

In real life, though, the snooze button became my best friend when the alarm went off every morning, making it a struggle to wake up at the same time every day. I also stayed up late, binge watching whatever was on Netflix or Hulu, trying to fill some type of void that I couldn’t explain.

I have these big dreams for my life – working in the film and television industry and writing for a living – but I didn’t (and in some ways still don’t) have the discipline or routine I need to make it all happen. And the more I focused on what I wasn’t doing right, the worse it seemed to get.

My routine already consisted of waking up, reading my devotional and the Bible, journaling, and then drinking tea, but something was missing.

I still felt so much stress and pressure to get things done throughout the day, but often ended up getting little to nothing done.

This frustrated me to no end, and I felt even more like a failure.

Everything started to change one morning at the end of last month, when I went to Blavity’s fairly new health and wellness website, 21 Ninety. There was a pop up titled Master Your Mornings, and it offered an e-book focused on helping you identify your personality type and finding a morning routine that will work for you. I signed up and loved it so much that I paid for the course they offered with the same title and focus.

Based on the e-book, I’m a mix between two personality types: “The Deep Thinker” and “The Artistic Visionary”. Both of these morning routines include time to recharge via yoga; some of the other tasks are connecting with nature, creating a short list of daily goals, brainstorming away from the desk and reading.

It also includes products that will assist you during your morning routine, and the one that caught my attention was the app Headspace. It walks you through the process of mindfulness meditation, which involves sitting comfortably, paying attention to your breath, and when your attention wanders, returning it to your breath.

After several times of looking at the app on the e-book, and being tired of things being the same, I decided to give it a chance, and even added my own twist.

My plan was to use the app to meditate, then stretch with ocean sounds playing in the background. Why the ocean? Well, the beach is my favorite place, and the ocean waves put me in a state where I can focus on God, be still, and communicate with the One who created me. Stretching also relieves stress and helps us wake up.

The first morning I did this, I fell in LOVE! I’ve been doing it for about two weeks now, and feel so relaxed, calm, confident and free. I didn’t realize how much anxiety I was holding in my body until I learned how to release it.

I can think more clearly, I’m more creative, it’s easier for me to write, and meeting and interacting with new people has been effortless. Over the past couple of weeks, I have had networking lunches with several local professionals I met online. A month ago, this would have caused a lot of anxiety and I wouldn’t have been able to totally be myself. But now, I’m so comfortable with myself that all I can be is me!

I’ve noticed that I’m also able to manage and process my emotions quicker, allow troubles to roll off my back, and be who I really want to be. It’s definitely something I’m going to do every day, at least most days, for the rest of my life. I feel like I can handle whatever comes my way!

Are you anxious about your daily tasks, or overwhelmed but unable to get things done? If so, it might be helpful to add practices to your routine that will encourage you to release and redirect this energy. If you need a place to start, sign up for 21Ninety’s Master Your Mornings e-book.

Be loved. Love you. Be love.

  1. I’ve been trying to work on meditating every night before bed and write positive thoughts down and go over them every single day. So far, I think it’s working. I tend to be irritable and anxious a lot, so I figured trying this would help. I think meditation is very important.
