Although we can raise children, work full-time jobs, run a business on our own, cook, clean, exercise, go to school, and do whatever else we need to do to build and maintain the life we’ve envisioned, there’s one thing we must do above everything.

We have to take care of ourselves.

#BlackGirlMagic is real. It’s powerful. It’s empowering. It’s inspirational. It’s wonderful.

It proves that we can do anything and everything, but only if we have enough magic.

As the pressures, struggles and demands of life weigh on us, as we live from day to day as superwomen, trying to save the world, our magic seeps from us, slowly, until there is nothing left.

Before we know it, we can be void of all magic, operating on frustration, anxiety and duty.

This is not a way to live, nor a good example for us to show our children regarding how to live.

Self-care is paramount to caring for others. We care for others in the same way we care for ourselves. We love others as we love ourselves.

So everything starts with us. The relationship we have with ourselves. The time we spend on and with ourselves.

If we don’t take care of us, who else will? In many ways, we are the only one who can care for, heal and build us.

Many times I feel stressed, overwhelmed and ready to quit it all. Really. I don’t want to do anything. I just want to sit and stare at the sky like I used to as a child. I want to have conversations with the stars. I want to become best friends with the sun again. I want to live!

But adulting appears to be in the way. But what if everything we’ve been taught and shown about adulting is wrong? What if adulting is really supposed to be about living a carefree life with care?

This is the life I want to live, the life I yearn to build for myself. Where spirituality is queen. Where creativity is what I walk, talk and breathe. Where every moment is full of God’s glory.

So I say all of this to say that we must take care of ourselves, because if we’re operating on empty, then we’re hollow treasures trying to make rough things beautiful things without anything to offer.

Have you ever tried to drive a car on empty, with the gas light on? For one, your worried, because the car slows down, then it takes much more work to accelerate, but uses more fuel; and at any moment it could just stop, leaving you stranded and anxious, regretting that you let it get to this point.

Don’t let your life or emotional being, spiritual being, physical being, mental being get to the point of emptiness. To the point where you are not full of joy, love, creativity, wisdom, compassion and strength; all because you have not gifted yourself strength, you have not had conversations with love, you have neglected creativity.

Take care of yourself by scheduling weekly time to do what feeds your inner woman – your heart, soul and mind, your passions, your dreams, your vision for your life, for your family’s life, for your legacy.

Take a walk in the park. Feed ducks at the pond. Read the book that’s been collecting dust on the bookshelf. Take a nap. Grab some colored pencils and color. Dance like no one is watching. Draw some bath water, turn some music on and melt into yourself. Buy some paint and fill a canvas with your imagination.

Love you the way you want to be loved, the way you want to love others. You deserve to be taken care of. You must be taken care of. The best person to do it is you.

  1. I need to start taking better care of my health. Eating, exercise etc. I have, slowly but surly. I also need to work on putting myself and my feelings first more. I’m often so nice and caring that I’m too nice and I suffer trying to please everyone else. Yet I often don’t get much help when I need it. This will change.

    1. Thank you for reading and sharing Lee! I totally understand and it’s good that you realize that you could take better care of yourself and plan to make a change. I, too, have suffered from being too nice at the expense of my emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. I’ve had to learn that being what is called a “people pleaser” leads to an unfulfilled, frustrating and depressing existence. It’s important that we’re honest with ourselves, others and express our truths. We must stand up for ourselves too. I’m so excited that you’re starting a new chapter and can’t wait to hear how your life, health and wellness improve! 💜
