8 Things To Do When You Feel Like Giving Up

Life can be difficult most times. From juggling relationships with family and friends, trying to create synergy between your work and personal lives, and simply taking time for yourself, it is so easy to get overwhelmed.

And this has been the story of my life for the past week, or more, LOL.

From freelance writing assignments for Curly Nikki, The Root, entertainment reviews for The St. Louis American, this blog, filing taxes (which I hate, by the way); needing to exercise, to release; to take care of myself and help my family with tasks, I feel like I’m about to explode into tears at any moment.

But sometimes, I eat. Sweet things like chocolate, cookies, fried foods and juice seem to calm the raging storm inside of me. But only for a little while. Then I feel like I need more; and since I don’t want to gain five pounds in a week, I’m good.

So what else can we do when we feel like we have so much to do, but so little time to do it? What can we do when we want to say “FORGET this”? Forget being an entrepreneur; forget following my dreams; forget working on these relationships; forget all of the requests people have.

Countless times, I’ve thought to myself: I’m going back to my comfortable, certain, 9 to 5 life, where I know when my next paycheck is coming and I’m not so distracted, a lot of the times, intentionally, from my feelings of inadequacy, stress and fragility.

But then I remember that the 9 to 5 oppresses my soul, it leaves me empty, bored and unhappy.

Well, when I woke up this morning, I had no blog post, because I didn’t have time over the last seven days to write it. But then God said to me; “Share what you’re going through now, express the feelings you have of wanting to give up. Release them through your words.” And here I am.

So what am I going to do to get myself energized, my mind right, and my heart ready for today’s work, for this week’s work, for this year’s work, for my life’s work?

To keep myself going mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically, I’m going to do these things, and I invite you to do them with me!

  1. Remind yourself that you can and will do all things through Christ, who strengthens you. This strength is not only physical; but it is mental, emotional and spiritual; it also applies to decision-making, wisdom, ability; really anything that you need help with. Create a list of affirmations (I am, I can, I will) and choose one to read to yourself daily each week.
  2. Talk to the Creator. God knows what you are going through, and He is waiting for you to come to Him with your concerns, needs, etc. Let God help you, His arms are open wide.
  3. Talk to your family and friends. During my sophomore year in college, I was ready to quit. I was tired, frustrated and couldn’t take any more of the stress. I had a conversation with my late uncle, and he encouraged me to keep on; he reminded me of my abilities and greatness. He reminded me that I could do anything I had my heart and mind set on. Two years later, I graduated, on time and with honors.
  4. Yoga. Although I need to do it more, yoga soothes my body, mind, heart and soul. I always feel so free, relaxed and ready to take on the world when I’m done.
  5. Exercise. Cardio naturally releases stress, creating a clear, focused mind. It makes you feel good because you are taking care of yourself.
  6. Nourish your soul. Whether it’s dancing, reading the Bible, painting, journaling, reading, taking a bath with music in the background, listening to music, singing, taking a walk in the park or cooking a healthy, yet tasty meal; TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Do something that feeds your inner being. Resolve comes from within, so you have to plant it and nurture it.
  7. Recognize that you are not alone, and that everyone who has fulfilled their hopes, dreams and desires has been through this chapter, this moment. They are who they are, and they are able to do and live as they do because they got through it. If you want to get to where you’re going, then you have to keep going. You will be a more wise, resilient and grateful person when you get to your destination.
  8. Seek therapy. If you need counseling to get to the other side, then seek it right away! Don’t allow yourself to suffer too long, and don’t concern yourself with what others might think, feel or say regarding your decision to see a counselor. This is your life, your heart, soul, body and mind, so treat them well.

Today I’m going to take care of myself; to do what nurtures my heart, soul and mind. I hope you do the same, and that you share your story when you get through the storm and can see the rainbow!

How do you get through rough patches? What has kept you going when you wanted to give up?

Be loved. Love you. Be love.
