Because I’m Black (A Poem)

Because I'm Black Featured Image with Black Woman in Thought and Human Mug

Because I’m Black
My life has no value
My melanin rich skin you can’t handle
So you put yourself up on a pedestal

Make my God white as snow
Eyes like the bright blue sky
Where does the truth lie?

Because I’m Black
You say that beauty is not within me
My curves, my kinks, my nose, my lips
My reflection in the mirror is amiss

Because I’m Black
You see my “ethnic” name
And pass on my resume
Welfare queen and king, here to stay

Because I’m Black
Our Schools
Don’t have books
Our Homes
Don’t have food

Because I’m Black
Police mangle and abuse
My life is okay to lose
What am I supposed to do?

Because I’m Black
The cries of my soul are myths
Life can’t possibly be the way I say it is
You say no racism, post racial
But every hashtag paints another picture

Because I’m Black
You say you don’t see color
But see, that’s the problem
If you don’t see color then you don’t see me

Because I’m Black
My rage is offensive
My expressions, my pain
You choose to be dismissive

Because I’m Black
You say “Go back to Africa!”
You refuse to see that no place for Black skin is safe
Even in the homeland Black existence is abased

Because I’m Black
A thug, dumb, is what you believe
We’re much more than what’s on the screen
But the TV, the news, is how you choose to see me

Because I’m Black
You refuse to see my humanity
Take a good look at me
Listen to my voice and have some empathy

Formed with God’s hands
A reflection of his heart
From the dirt of the earth
My cocoa skin is a charm

Because I’m Black

I’m the canvas on which life is colored
I’m Black and I’m (just trying to get) free

Be loved. Love you. Be love.
